I realize it is difficult to imagine anyone flat out
lying to a child with such an adorable face. So to ease some of my
lying guilt we will call what I have done
'trickery' instead. You see the other day the whole Sumens clan (Russ, Lou-that's me-, Aly, and Thatch) were driving over to L.T.'s house to pick up a table. On our way home Russ decides he is
VERY thirsty and needs to make a quick stop for some water! (If you know my husband you know this is about ALL that he will drink and he drinks a TON of it! which is another post entirely! So anyway . . . ) We pull into the gas station, I run in and get 2 water bottles (Arrowhead of course!) and run back out (well, I
paid and
then exited but you get the point). As we are driving Aly decides she would like some water (and the water in her sippy cup just won't do). Russ' water is almost gone so he hands her his bottle to let her finish it off (once handed over we usually don't ask for them back she is quite the queen of backwash . . . nasty!). She contentedly sips on her water bottle
until she notices that mommy has a water too! Being the toddler that she is she
MUST have Mommy's water! (Which is now being shared by Mommy and Daddy since his has gone to the
place of no return.) Not wanting to create 2 unusable bottles Daddy takes Aly's water and simply hands it back to her, no fooling this girl! she immediately screams (yes screams), "Caca! No, No, NO! MOMMY'S" Well what is a mother to do but . . . "trick". So I take Aly's bottle from her, turn my back to her (to make her think I am doing the great switch), and give her her old bottle back! She smiles (as if she has won some grand reward) sweetly says "De-Dah" (which is Aly-ese for "thank you") takes a sip and says "ooh . . num-nummm!" Russ and I of course burst out laughing that the same water that was "caca" 3 minutes ago is now considered "nummmm" (the extra mmmm's are to show how she so sweetly held out the word to emphasize it's 'goodness') and the moral of this story
: to save one's sanity when parenting a toddler there is nothing wrong with a little bit of trickery now and then!
